Does Google use llms.txt?
Short answer: No — Google does not use llms.txt. Google representatives have said as much for both Google Search and AI Overviews. But that one line gets misread constantly, so let's be precise about what Google actually said, why, and — importantly — what it does not mean.
What Google actually said
Asked directly whether Google uses llms.txt, Google's Search team has said it does not — llms.txt is not an input Googlebot or Google-Extended reads for indexing, ranking, or AI Overviews. Google crawls and renders your real pages, and works from your sitemap.xml and robots.txt, the same way it always has. Adding an llms.txt file doesn't change what Google sees.
Why Google doesn't use it
- Google already has your whole site. It crawls and renders every page at scale, so a separate hand-curated index adds little for a search engine that isn't short on data.
- It's gameable. A site could list one thing in llms.txt and show users another. Google prefers to judge the pages it can actually see and verify.

What to do about it
- Keep your Google SEO separate. Clean pages, a good sitemap, and sane robots.txt are what move Google — llms.txt isn't part of that equation, so don't expect it to be.
